FAQ

Questions dentists and patients ask us most

Straight answers about our scans, safety, turnaround and referrals — written by our radiology team.

What is a CBCT scan used for in dentistry?
A dental CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scan is used to create a 3D image of the jaw, teeth and nerve pathways. Dentists use it to plan implants, assess impacted teeth, retreat complex root canals, and evaluate the TMJ or airway before surgery.
Is a dental CBCT scan safe?
Yes. Dental CBCT uses a much lower radiation dose than a medical CT scan, and our equipment is calibrated to ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) protocols with the field of view sized to the specific clinical question, minimizing exposure.
How long does it take to get a dental X-ray report?
At Nagu Diagnostics, radiologist-read reports for OPG and CBCT scans are delivered to the referring dentist within 24 hours of the scan being taken.
What's the difference between OPG and CBCT?
An OPG is a single flat panoramic X-ray showing both jaws in one 2D image, ideal for routine screening. A CBCT scan produces a 3D reconstruction of bone, nerves and roots, used when more precise depth and volume information is needed, such as for implant planning.
Do I need a referral from my dentist to book a scan?
A referral is preferred so we know exactly which scan and clinical question to address, but patients can also book directly and we will confirm the correct scan type with your treating dentist before your appointment.
How do I prepare for a dental X-ray or CBCT appointment?
No special preparation is needed for OPG, CBCT or digital impressions. Simply remove removable metal items such as earrings, glasses, retainers or dentures before your scan, and arrive a few minutes early to complete a short form.
Who reads and reports my scan?
Every scan at Nagu Diagnostics is read and reported by a qualified oral and maxillofacial radiologist, not just captured by a technician, ensuring a clinically accurate diagnostic report.
Can I get a second opinion on an existing scan?
Yes. You or your dentist can send us an existing CBCT or OPG scan for a radiologist second-opinion report, useful for complex implant or surgical planning.
